Ireland Plans To Allocate 60 Million Euros For Greenway Expansion in 2022

Recently, the Irish government announced that it would provide 676 million euros in funding to expand Ireland's greenway network and road construction.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Transport, 60 million euros of this cash will now be allocated to 40 greenway proposals covering almost every county. The Irish government has more broadly pledged to spend 360 million euros on active travel every year during the term of the government, and a new announcement is expected in 2022.
In many cases, Greenway Investments will see local authorities cooperate to deliver projects in their areas. Cork and Waterford are developing the Mallow to Dungarvan route, and Sligo, Cavan and Leitrim are working with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to develop the Collooney to Enniskillen route.
In addition, border counties will also see projects that cross county boundaries. Donegal is advancing some greenways, and Cavan, Monaghan, Letrim and Routh are also receiving investments that will expand cross-border greenways.
Minister Ryan said: "This funding will also support the expansion of the Grand Canal Greenway in Offaly, Kildare, and South Dublin, connecting the North Cree Greenway with the Limerick Greenway, and connecting Water Ford and New Ross Greenways are connected with Waterford Greenways. As more and more Greenways are connected, we are entering an exciting new phase"
Minister Ryan continued: "I am particularly pleased to agree on national and regional greenway best practice guidelines. State Minister Hildegarde Naughton TD said: "The Galway to Dublin Greenway is a 330-kilometer car-free corridor between Galway and Dublin, connecting the Atlantic coast and the east coast. The funding announced today is particularly exciting. Meath, Kildare Counties such as, Westmeath, Offaly, etc. will benefit from the investment in the project. Once completed, the Dublin-Galway project will provide local and national amenities for the community and tourists. It will also support local businesses such as cafes, shops, BBs, campsites and hotels.
"As a minister in Western Ireland, I am also very happy to see Connemara Greenway receive a strong funding of more than 3 million euros in 2022. This funding includes from Clifden to Recess (1.9 million euros), Gore Wei's route to Moycullen (600,000 euros) and Derrygimlagh-Clifden-Kylemore (550,000 euros). I am very looking forward to riding this route, some of which will be completed in the second half of next year."
